Community Science Engagement

Engage our communities in creating and preserving habitats for birds and other native wildlife

Mobilizing our communities through education, advocacy, and immersive engagement in the form of citizen science, workshops, and nature walks

Results of the 2021 South India Backyard BioBlitz

With tremendous participation from more than 600 community members who contributed as observers or identifiers between June 25 and July 24, 2021, we documented over 15,000 observations spanning over 2,800 species in just a month. This bioblitz was an incredible experience!

Our goal was to safely document the biodiversity in South India during June/July to help us get familiar with plants, animals, and fungi in our very own backyards, gardens, or neighborhoods during this season. This activity, in turn, helps generate data that scientists can use in conservation and research and enables the creation of better field guides for naturalists.

We aimed high - over 5,000 observations covering a minimum of 1500 species. We not only met our goals but wildly exceeded them!

Hopefully, everyone had fun bioblitzing safely, and the event offered comfort and distraction through immersion in nature during the pandemic. Thank you all for this fantastic community work and for signing up to volunteer!

Results of the Flintridge Prep Global BioBlitz

Thanks to all the volunteer participants of the Flintridge Prep BioBlitz.

Our goal was to safely document the biodiversity in Southern California during Feb/Mar to help us enjoy nature while contributing to the iNaturalist citizen science database.

We were able to catalog more than 950 observations covering 350+ species thanks to the contributions of our observers and identifiers.

Hopefully, the event offered comfort and distraction through immersion in nature and science during the pandemic. Thank you for this fantastic community work and for contributing your time.

2021 South India Backyard Bioblitz

This event has now concluded.

A four-week effort to safely document the rich biodiversity of South India, working to expanding iNaturalist coverage of this ecologically crucial region..

South India is the location of a major biodiversity hotspot, and many of its organisms are threatened or endangered. The iNaturalist community database has recently emerged as one of the premier tools for scientists to understand the distribution and abundance of biodiversity worldwide. Much of South India still remains relatively poorly covered in iNaturalist. By mobilizing nature lovers to document biodiversity in a concentrated and focused fashion, this bioblitz aims to document the region's organisms, which assists the research of scientists and conservationists.

Flintridge Prep Global BioBlitz

This event has now concluded.

An effort by members of the Flintridge Prep community to understand the biodiversity of the ecosystems in our own backyards, make a contribution to science, and immerse ourselves in nature! Observations of any wild organisms from anywhere on the planet are welcome and encouraged. These observations will be available for scientists to use in their efforts to better understand and protect vulnerable species and ecosystems.
